Accelerator Highlights
'Social Impact' Teen Accelerator - Term 2, 2017
This term, we have focused on learning skills like problem solving, creative and critical thinking, presentation skills and working effectively in groups. Students have also had the opportunity to apply their new skills to a real world problem.
In week 2 students were fortunate to meet a young social entrepreneur - Sunny Forsyth, and hear about how his not-for-profit uses a unique clay pottery water filter technology to bring clean drinking water to those who need it in developing nations. Sunny spent time talking to students about the science behind the system as well as some of the challenges he encountered. Students then applied the problem-solving techniques and creative thinking skills they had been learning about to design their own water filtration system before presenting their ideas back to Sunny.
Thank you for the recent Teen Accelerator my children attended. They both thoroughly enjoyed the experience - it was a great combination of a supportive small group environment, high interest content and participation, with enough of a challenge to push them out of their comfort zone. The highlight was presenting their proposal to an ACT Government MLA. It is not every day that an 11 year old gets his idea pitched to an MLA! Thank you for creating a unique program teaching skills that are so important for the new world of work my children are going to face.
Creative and critical thinking, presentation, cooperative team work and an entrepreneurial mindset are all essential skills for success. Your level of support for the participants was fantastic, allowing each of my children to participate fully, taking into account their strengths and weaknesses. Your program was so good that my kids have signed up with enthusiasm for the next one!
